World Environment Day 2015

World Environment Day 2015

As children we engage with soil through sandy feet, mud pies and sense of wonder at the life of small creatures that inhabit the earth. At the end of life we return to the soil, and in between it is the dirt caked onto the soles of our gardening boots that reminds us of the crucial role that soil plays in sustaining human life.

The theme for World Environment Day this year is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” This year is also the International Year of Soils. We have chosen to focus on soil as a critical issue for the sustainable future of the planet and because it needs to be a vital consideration in our patterns of sustainable production and consumption.

Within this interactive document you can find resources for worship, reflection, awareness raising and action, prepared by Uniting Church social justice staff from all around Australia. This year World Environment Day, celebrated every year on 5th June, falls on a Friday. While some of the worship resources are taken from the lectionary readings for 7th June, the material in this resource can be used at any time. Please download, follow the links, and share it widely with others. For the sake of the earth, and a sustainable future, let’s talk about soil!
